Inok Kalkwarf's Art Philosophy

My philosophy of art is based upon my lifelong desire to achieve independence and to understand my own heritage. I have discovered that culture is not bound by limitations of a canvas. When I use different materials, create and installation, or do a performance, it gives additional texture and meaning to the theme of my art. Creating an entire space where the viewer can experience the art allows the viewer to claim that art. Although my experience may be different than that of other people, it is still a human experience. Creating this space allows me to communicate what I have learned about myself and my culture in a very direct, visceral manner. I can do more than express a feeling – I can create an experience. This creation allows me to understand myself and to give and opportunity to others to expand their sense of cultural wonder.

I love to watch the swans. The swan is so beautiful when it swims. It is smooth and graceful on top of the water. But underneath the water, those little feet must churn in order for the swan to move forward. When the swan leaves the water to walk on the land, it is awkward and ugly. At first I only wanted the world to see me swim smoothly and gracefully on op of the water. I wanted all of my problems to be hidden under the surface. MY art has helped me get out and walk on land without being afraid of how awkward I am or how ugly I might be. When the swan flies, it must work very hard to get off of the ground. There has been a sublime joy in doing the hard work to learn these things about myself, and this work has enabled me to fly freely with the elegance of that swan. I want to help all of the others who, like me, have come from other cultures or from situations which make them a prisoner of their culture. I want to help them understand what I have learned – that we can use art to purify ourselves and find the real beauty in life.
